University By-Laws

The new Student Names Policy, Policy 172, was recently implemented and applies to all students at Toronto Metropolitan University.

  • This policy aims to support students’ chosen form of self- identification. One of TMU’s goals is to foster inclusiveness. Thus the decision was made to recognize that students should be allowed to identify themselves and be addressed by names other than their legal names by the University.

  • TMU is committed to protecting the integrity of student records while also supporting students’ self-identification. In light of this, the university still require students to use their legal name on legal records and official documents such as transcripts.

  • Further, TMU recognizes that is it important to ensure that students feel safe and comfortable while at school as this fosters success. The importance of giving students the opportunity to update their records to reflect their identity is acknowledged through the implementation of this policy, and it especially supports transgender, gender transitioning, and gender non-conforming students.
